 Usage

Filter aid: Anticaking agent, binder; Bulking agent; Disintegrant; Dispersant; Texture improver; Thickening agent; Water treatment agent. It is specified by the EEC for the purification of beer. As specified in GB 2760-96, it is regarded as a processing aid. According to the EEC-HACSG regulations, it shall not be used in infant food. As an anticaking agent, in China, it is allowed to be used in powdered flavors with a maximum usage of 50g/kg; it can also be used in ice cream with a maximum usage of 40g/kg; it can also be used in light cream and vegetable fat powder with a maximum usage of 20.0g/kg. When the hydroxyl groups in the cellulose macromolecule undergo esterification or etherification reactions, many useful products can be derived. The cellulose esters actually applied include: cellulose nitrate, cellulose acetate, cellulose acetate butyrate and cellulose xanthate. Cellulose ethers include: methyl cellulose, carboxymethyl cellulose, ethyl cellulose, hydroxyethyl cellulose, cyanoethyl cellulose, hydroxypropyl cellulose and hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose, etc. In addition, there are mixed ester-ether derivatives. Microcrystalline cellulose can be applied to industries such as textiles, garments, brewing, food, and papermaking.

Microcrystalline cellulose generally has a lower density for freeze-dried products and a higher density for spray-dried products. The moisture content is about 5%. Microcrystalline cellulose is dispersible but insoluble in water, insoluble in dilute acids, organic solvents and oils, swells and partially dissolves in dilute alkaline solutions. Dispersing microcrystalline cellulose powder in water yields a white transparent gel or paste. Except for extremely dilute ones, it remains stable for many years.
