Usage
Bronopol is effective against a wide range of plant pathogenic bacteria and is mainly used as a seed treatment agent and the like. In addition, due to its broad-spectrum antibacterial properties, it was used as a disinfectant in the medical field as early as the 1960s. With the increasing development of cosmetics, coupled with the broad-spectrum antibacterial properties of bronopol and its good water solubility, since the late 1980s, it has been used as a cosmetic preservative and has developed extremely rapidly. In recent years, bronopol has been widely applied in aspects such as feed preservation, coatings, fur anti-corrosion, inhibition of bacteria in air conditioning circulating water, inhibition of bacteria in oilfield water injection, as well as disinfection of airplanes, vehicles and ships, and the demand for it has increased rapidly.
As a bromo-nitro alcohol broad-spectrum antibacterial agent, bronopol has the following characteristics: it has broad-spectrum antibacterial activity. In emulsion products containing surfactants and formulations with high concentrations of protein substances within the pH range of 4 to 9, it has effective antibacterial activity, especially having a special effect on Pseudomonas aeruginosa with strong antibacterial activity. It is non-toxic, non-irritating, and non-allergenic. The usage amount of this preservative in cosmetics is 0.01% to 0.05%. Toxicity test results show that this preservative is safe and is one of the cosmetic preservatives approved by the US FDA. It has a synergistic effect in compounding. According to statistics from the US FDA, among all preservatives used in cosmetics, the usage frequency of bronopol is among the top. It is the sharp increase in commercial demand that has promoted the research and industrial production of bronopol.
