1,4-Butanediol (BDO) is an important organic chemical raw material with a wide range of applications. The main application routes are as follows:

Production of polyester product

  • For the synthesis of polybutylene terephthalate (PBT): PBT is an excellent thermoplastic polyester engineering plastic. It has good mechanical properties, excellent chemical corrosion resistance, great electrical insulation, and strong dimensional stability. It is widely used in the electronics and electrical appliances field to manufacture various electrical appliance housings and connectors. Some parts in the automotive industry, such as car door handles and bumpers, are also commonly produced using PBT materials.
  • For the production of thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU): TPU combines the high elasticity of rubber with the easy processability of plastic. It is wear-resistant, oil-resistant, and cold-resistant. It is often used to make shoe soles, pipes, wire and cable sheaths, industrial conveyor belts, etc. 1,4-Butanediol is an indispensable raw material for the synthesis of TPU, endowing the product with good flexibility and tensile properties.

Manufacture of γ-butyrolactone and N-methylpyrrolidone (NMP)

  • γ-butyrolactone: It is an excellent high-boiling-point solvent with strong solubility, having a good dissolving effect on many organic compounds and polymers. It is widely used in the coating, ink, and printing and dyeing industries. It is also the starting material for the synthesis of various spices and pharmaceutical intermediates, from which various fine chemicals with special structures and functions can be derived later.
  • N-methylpyrrolidone: It is a polar aprotic solvent, showing excellent dissolving ability for many insoluble organic, inorganic, and polymer materials. It is extremely crucial in the production of lithium batteries, used to dissolve binders, electrode active materials, etc. It also has important applications in pesticide production, electronic cleaning, and extraction and separation processes.

For the synthesis of tetrahydrofuran (THF): Tetrahydrofuran is a commonly used excellent solvent, having good solubility for many natural and synthetic organic compounds. In organic synthesis laboratories and the reaction systems of chemical production, it is often used as a solvent to promote reactions. In addition, it is also the raw material for the synthesis of polytetrahydrofuran (PTMEG).
